You can imagine how hard it would be for a IT staff to support thousands of ungoverned team sites created within personal sites. Instead, you should ask your IT Admin to create a SharePoint Online site for you. This also works in OneDrive, but it's not recommended. If you are an experienced SharePoint user, you know you can get to Site Contents page, and create your sites or apps from there. Microsoft has released an updated version that is going to automatically move your OneNote files to OneDrive when you turn the KFM feature on.ĭON'T create sub sites in OneDrive. UPDATE: previously OneNote files would also block the " Known Folders Move" feature - that enables automatic redirection of your Documents, Pictures, and Desktop folders from your PC to OneDrive. OneNote has its own sync process, so make sure to use OneNote option to move your notes to the cloud. More info here.ĭON'T sync your OneNote files. Edit: this is now resolved with Files on Demand, so you don't have to worry about selecting folders. So don't do that, keep OneDrive for your real documents. OneDrive has numerous limitations, like 300,000 items for the sync client, or 400 character limit for files and folders, and these limits could potentially be reached if you try to drag and drop a whole drive or system folder into OneDrive. If you want to make a hard drive backup, there are other great tools for that. It might sound obvious, but believe me, being there, seen that.

Also, if you are already on Exchange Online, make sure to check this guide on how to move your PSTs to Exchange Online Archiving.ĭON'T try to sync your entire hard drive. Microsoft has an official guide to move PST files out of OneDrive here. You can upload them to a non-synced folder for backup purpose, but make sure to copy to a local and non-synced folder before you open those in Outlook. And it will create infinite versions of itself in the cloud. If you try to sync it, it will never finish, as the file will be locked by Outlook. These files are kept permanently opened while you have Outlook opened, and usually they are huge files, containing gigabyes of email, stored in a non-structured text database. By active, I mean files you have opened in Outlook, so that you can still search data on them. Never, by any chance, move your active PST files to a OneDrive folder that is being synchronized to the cloud.

But if you still rely on PST files to archive your old emails, this is for you. If you are lucky enough to be in a company that has been able to get rid of PST files, lucky you, you can skip this. Here's a little guide on DO's and DON'Ts I put together from my daily experiences as a IT guy supporting OneDrive for a few thousands of happy users. OneDrive is pretty easy to use, Microsoft has done a great job on making a real user friendly product.
